Initial Psychiatric Evaluation

This initial session with one of our medical providers is a 60-minute comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. The provider will review your current symptoms, life circumstances, past medical and mental health history, and goals for treatment. They will then provide their initial assessment and work with you to create a personalized treatment plan. Additional lab testing may be recommended and facilitated through one of our trusted lab partners.

Complimentary 10-minute Phone Consultation

After an appointment is requested (either by phone or through the “request appointment” link on website), a medical provider will schedule a brief phone call to gather more information, give an overview of services, answer any questions you have, and to assess whether our practice is a good fit for you. Once an appointment is scheduled, District Psychiatry and Wellness will send you an intake packet, which must be completed online prior to your appointment.

Psychiatric Follow-Up

Follow up times will be based on a collaborative decision between you and your medical provider. If therapy is part of the treatment plan, longer appointment times will be accommodated for you. At District Psychiatry and Wellness, we employ different therapy modalities in conjunction with medication management to help patients grow and improve their overall wellbeing.

Couples & Family Therapy

Couples and families present unique, nuanced dynamics that require specialized training and experience. This type of therapy will be facilitated by a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) who understands the importance of fostering healthy communication techniques and building trust. Our methodology is loosely based on the Gottman method and aims to repair damaged relationships and establish protocols for continued relationship maintenance.

Individual Therapy

Therapy is a service that is offered both concurrently with psychiatric care or as a stand-alone method for mental health treatment. The goal of therapy is to help you gain insight into emotions, relationships, and behaviors, and to learn new skills for managing life's stressors. Our providers use evidence-based therapeutic modalities to achieve these outcomes and help you reach your unique goals.

Specialities

Anxiety Disorders

An anxiety disorder is a mental health condition typically characterized by excessive worry, fear, and unease. These symptoms usually negatively affect daily functioning and are different from an anxious response to a stressful situation. There are different types of anxiety disorders, such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Phobia, Panic Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can significantly impact work and school performance, and interfere with interpersonal relationships. Symptoms are usually present from childhood and can include difficulty with focus and concentration, impulsivity, learning/processing difficulties, disorganization, and hyperactivity. Our practice employs testing, medication, exercises, and other tools to reduce the harmful effects of ADHD on our clients’ productivity and lives.

Genetic Testing

Genetic testing is precision medicine. This cutting-edge technology allows us to assess how your body responds to different psychiatric medications based on your genes. Our practice is a strategic partner of Genomind, and our providers are trained to analyze test results and explain them to you in plain speech. Genetic tests require a cheek swab and home tests can be sent directly to you.

Insomnia

Getting adequate and restful sleep is vital for physical and mental health. Insomnia can make it difficult to fall and stay asleep, and can be a symptom of anxiety or depression. Lack of sleep can negatively impact performance and productivity, as well as worsen underlying mental health conditions.

Medication Management and De-Prescribing

Medication can be a necessary tool when treating multiple mental health conditions; however, our providers prescribe medication only when needed and in conjunction with other lifestyle changes, such as exercise and dietary planning. We strive to simplify and optimize our patients’ medication regimens. Our providers have formal training in complicated psychotropic medication management and offer rare professional expertise in de-prescribing.

Mood Disorders

A mood disorder is a mental health condition that impacts a person’s emotional state. There are different types of mood disorders, such as Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder (types I and II), Postpartum Depression, and Persistent Depressive Disorder.

Nutritional Psychiatry

Food we eat can impact how we feel psychologically and emotionally. At District Psychiatry and Wellness, we employ an integrative approach to psychiatry and use nutrition as a key tool in improving mental and physical health. Our providers have completed extensive study on nutritional psychiatry, and enjoy helping patients improve their dietary habits.

Performance Optimization

District Psychiatry and Wellness providers specialize in sports psychiatry and helping athletes or other high achieving individuals move past obstacles to optimally function. Our experience working with professional athletes and business leaders make us a strong fit for these groups and other healthcare providers seeking psychological performance optimization.

PTSD and TBI

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that can develop when someone is exposed to a life-threatening event. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an injury (blow or jolt to head or body) that can cause damage to the brain. PTSD and TBI often have overlapping symptoms; as a former Army psychiatrist, Dr. Kappes has extensive experience caring for patients with both PTSD and/or TBI.

Womens’ Mental Health

Women have unique mental health needs, and many do not focus on their own mental health as a result of balancing multiple roles simultaneously. Our practice employs an all-female clinical staff and specializes in women’s health. Anxiety disorders in women, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), perinatal psychiatry, and postpartum depression are areas in which our providers carry both professionally accredited certifications and extensive experience.
